Camp Korey

Carnation, WA
425-844-3100
www.campkorey.org

Camp Korey’s mission is to honor the courage, strength, and determination of children and their families who battle life-threatening and serious illnesses; and to provide them with a safe, friendly, medically sound environment in which to simply have fun and be kids.

We are committed to providing care and programming that emphasizes safety, love, respect and empowerment.  At Camp Korey, campers have the freedom they need to challenge themselves and reclaim their childhood, and families receive the respite and support they need to heal.

Programs at Camp Korey are specifically designed for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses.  Campers can safely enjoy traditional camp activities, with the addition of full medical support, adaptive methods, and the practice of “challenge by choice.” Camp Korey campers can swim, boat, fish, enjoy arts and crafts, try horseback riding, climb an indoor climbing wall or our new adaptive ropes course, and so much more.  Campers take part in fun camp-wide evening activities, including campfires complete with marshmallows and songs, a dance party, stage night, movies, and more.  Camp Korey is all about FUN, and time spent here is filled with laughter, making friends, and discovering new talents.  Children whose lives have been a series of medical procedures and hospital stays are transformed into “just kids.”  Campers spend time with caring counselors, and with other kids coping with the same illnesses or conditions.  They quickly realize that at camp they are not alone, and learn to feel special rather than different.

Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery

Spokane, WA
509-535-3155
www.vanessabehan.org

The mission of the Crisis Nursery is to provide immediate refuge for children and support to strengthen families. This mission evolved from the tragic story of Vanessa Kay Behan, a Spokane girl who died from child abuse injuries at the age of two. Following her death, a group of local business people established the Crisis Nursery so that parents would have a safe place to bring their children in the face of crises. Our primary services are:

  • 24-hour child care for infants and children under the age of seven
  • Parent education
  • Crisis counseling for parents
  • Referrals to other community agencies

The Crisis Nursery helps parents who are having difficulty providing safe shelter and care for their children. They may be dealing with issues as complex as substance abuse, domestic violence and homelessness. Or, they may just be exhausted and worn-out from the demands of parenting.
